Steininger Behavioral Care Services Wins $1.1 Million Grant
for Children’s Mobile Response and Stabilization Program
Steininger to Provide Crisis Intervention Services
(Steininger) has been awarded a $1.1 million grant from the New Jersey rtnership for Children to implement a Children’s Mobile Response and Stabilization Program.Steininger is the premier provider of rehabilitative mental health services for residents of Camden County and environs. Funding from the grant will allow Steininger mental health professionals to assist youth and their families who are in an active state of destabilization and/or crisis, and whose behavior puts them at risk of losing their present living arrangements.
“This is a significant achievement for our organization. More importantly, it is good news for families in our communities, because it strengthens the support system for children who are experiencing emotional or behavioral trauma and in need of immediate care,” commented Dr. Leonard S. Altamura, Steininger President and CEO. “It will also prevent and reduce the need for inpatient hospitalization,” he added.
According to Karen Durbin, Steininger Mobile Response Program Director who is heading up the Children’s Mobile Response and Stabilization Program, any parent, service provider or other invested party can call a toll free number to obtain access, regardless of insurance. “Experienced clinicians will be available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week to respond immediately to the location of the crisis. A child or youth can receive Mobile Response services for up to 72 hours. If the crisis is not resolved and/or the child remains unstable after 72 hours, services will be continued through a network of mobile stabilization services.”One of the responsibilities of Mobile Response is to develop an Individualized Crisis Plan (ICP) with the child and family that will identify appropriate interventions to minimize risk, aid in crisis stabilization, and assure that the child/youth will be able to remain in, or return to, his or her present living arrangement.
Steininger submitted its grant proposal for the Children’s Mobile Response and Stabilization Program in July, and was notified of the award in October. “We are currently in a ‘ramping up’ phase. We will begin providing services to the community beginning February 1st,” said Ms. Durbin. The Mobile Response Team will comprise 12 behavioral care professionals, who will represent a mix of current Steininger employees and newly hired staff.

Steininger Behavioral Health Care Services Is Awarded
State Grant
to Re-integrate Inmates With Mental Illness Into the Community
Funding Will Create Program With Goal to Prevent
Re-admission to Correctional System
Cherry Hill, NJ, June 6, 2003 –Steininger Behavioral Care Services, the premier provider of rehabilitative mental health services for residents of Camden County and its environs, has been awarded a $125,000 grant by the New Jersey Division of Mental Health Services (DMHS). The grant will be used to assist inmates suffering from mental illness to transition as smoothly as possible back into the community from the Camden County Correctional Facility. It is also designed to prevent re-admission to the correctional system or psychiatric hospital. “This is a positive step forward in the treatment of inmates who are mentally ill, because it enables Steininger to provide the aftercare linkage to community services that is so important to rehabilitation,” commented Lou Cappelli, Camden County Freeholder and Liaison to Department of Corrections.
“We are especially pleased to receive this funding. It will be used to establish a program that connects inmates with mental illness to services where help can best be provided, rather than using the correctional system as either a housing or treatment alternative,” said Steininger President and CEO Len Altamura. The new program will allow Steininger professionals to
devote their efforts to those inmates who need linkages to community resources such as Housing, Medication, Outpatient Treatment and Case Management. The lack of such services and the linkages to them are often what start the cycle of mental health decline and subsequent incarceration. A primary goal of the new program, which is expected to begin functioning in May 2003, is to break the cycle of decompensation and re-incarceration for adults who are seriously mentally ill. “Providing access to needed services and follow up care management can prevent unnecessary incarceration for this population,” stated Pat Cacacie, Steininger VP for Clinical Operations.
The new program will consist of a Forensic Case Management Team that will be accessible both within the correctional system setting and in the community as outreach support to law enforcement entities. The Team will act as a resource for local Police Departments in situations where a person with mental illness comes in contact with law enforcement. Team members will assess the mental status of the individual and provide assistance with potential alternatives to incarceration. If diversion is determined to be the preferred course of action, the Team will work in collaboration with the Police Department to make the appropriate linkages to community services that can provide for stabilization of symptoms and ongoing treatment. Ultimately, redirection to established community resources better serves both the inmates and their communities by allowing those inmates to maintain the links to social services that can help them break the cycle of re-incarceration. These links are generally lost when they re-enter the correctional system.

Steininger Behavioral Care Services Hosts Seminar To Help Families
Cope with Mentally Ill Loved Ones During Holidays
Organization To Begin New 12-Week Educational Series
in March 2003 on Mental Illnesses
Cherry Hill, NJ, February 13, 2003 – During the holidays, living with and caring for a mentally ill relative can be especially difficult. To help families develop strategies to cope with the situation, Steininger Behavioral Care Services, Camden County’s premier provider of rehabilitative mental health services, recently sponsored an evening seminar on “How to Handle the Holidays with a Mentally Ill Relative”. Offered through Steininger’s Individual and Family Support Services (IFSS), which provide education, practical support, and financial aid to help mentally ill persons and their families, the free seminar was hosted here at Steininger’s 19 E. Ormond Avenue facility. It was open to Camden County families caring for a mentally ill relative 18 years of age or over.
“At special times of the year such as holidays, problems are compounded when a family member suffers from a mental health disorder. Everyone is expected to be happy and get along, even when the situation is not perfect,” said Emmanuel Estacio, M.Ed, MSW Steininger Family Support Specialist. Conducted by Mr. Estacio, the seminar focused on factors that can make the holidays particularly hard for the mentally ill. He recommended tactics for helping families minimize the negative impact on a mentally ill family member, such as planning ahead for quiet times, avoiding surprises, and being flexible. Mr. Estacio ended the seminar by discussing steps families then can take to reduce the stress placed on themselves and other family members.
In March, 2003 Steininger will begin a new, 12-week educational lecture series covering major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic depression, panic and anxiety disorders. The weekly sessions will review available treatment options, medications, the mental health system, and special considerations for siblings and younger children affected by a mentally ill adult relative. The lectures are free to the public, and will be held at the 19 E. Ormand Avenue offices from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. A light dinner will be included. Individuals interested in finding out more about the educational series should contact Steininger’s Administrative office at 856-482-8747.
Individual and Family Support Services are an important part of Steininger’s integrated Mental Health Care support programs. Steininger works closely with the Camden County chapter of NAMI (National Alliance for the Mentally Ill) to offer mental health education, coping skill strategies, and linkage to services and resources for families caring for an adult relative with mental illness. Steininger Family Specialists teach families how to advocate on their own behalf and for their relative. They also facilitate educational and support groups to increase knowledge of mental health issues and resources, to improve problem solving and to ease isolation.
All 21 counties within the state of New Jersey sponsor an IFSS program that offers similar education and support to individuals with mental illness and their families. New Jersey is the only state in the country that has implemented a statewide initiative designed exclusively to help inform and support the needs of ‘well’ family members. Families who would like information about all NAMI and IFSS programs in the state can call toll-free 1-866-NAMI-IFSS.
