Steininger Behavioral Care Services Celebrates
May is Mental Health Month

National Observance Recognizes Importance
of Treating Mental Illness

Cherry Hill, NJ, May 2, 2005 - Steininger Behavioral Care Services joins mental health advocates across the country in celebrating May is Mental Health Month.

Each May for more than 50 years, Mental Health Month has improved the health and lives of millions of Americans. This year, we want even more people to know that caring for their minds, as well as their bodies, is good for overall health and key to their success at home, at work and at school.

“Affecting one in five Americans, mental health problems are very common in children and adults alike, and are fortunately very treatable. Many people experience mental health problems in their lifetimes. It is important to know that treatment is available that can help,” said Leonard S. Altamura, Steininger President/CEO.

Individual and Family Support Services (IFSS) are an important part of Steininger’s continuum of behavioral care services. Steininger works closely with the Camden County chapter of the National Alliance for the Mentally Ill (NAMI) to offer mental health education, coping skill strategies, and linkage to services and resources for families caring for an adult relative with mental illness. Steininger Family Support Specialists teach families how to advocate on their own behalf and for their relative. They also facilitate educational and support groups to increase knowledge of mental health issues and resources, to improve problem solving and to ease isolation.

All 21 counties within the state of New Jersey sponsor an IFSS program that offers similar education and support to individuals with mental illness and their families. New Jersey is the only state in the country that has implemented a statewide initiative designed exclusively to help inform and support the needs of ‘well’ family members. Families who would like information about all NAMI and IFSS programs in the state can call toll-free 1-866-NAMI-IFSS

In May 2005, Steininger began their spring lecture series for families covering major mental illnesses such as schizophrenia, manic depression, panic and anxiety disorders. Emphasis is placed on how caregivers can support someone with a psychiatric disorder. The weekly sessions review available treatment options, medications, the mental health system, and special considerations for siblings and younger children affected by a mentally ill adult relative.

On June 29, Steininger Family Support Services will offer an educational presentation about Postpartum Depression. The workshop is for anyone who is interested in learning about this common medical condition that effects 10 – 20% of all new mothers. All lectures are free to the public, and are held at 499 Cooper Landing Road, in Cherry Hill, from 6 p.m.- 8 p.m. A light dinner will be included. Individuals interested in finding out more about the educational series should contact Steininger’s Administrative office at 856-482-8747.
